Clay, Stones and Shards

Ute Brade’s works are forms made from clay. And with this simple truth, a world opens up.

Because there is nothing concealed behind it, the gaze is free for the form created in her hands or on the wheel, and for the colour that the clay itself brings with it. This self-evidence is shocking and challenges the artist and the viewer – Brade’s forms are naked. She doesn’t cover up, she hides nothing, there is no back door. In some places she carefully opens her formations so that we can approach them. Warmth and sensuality greet us.

“If only I had Ute’s imagination!” said Gertraud Möhwald, for whom a refined surface embodies a suppression of memory.

With her torsos and heads built according to classical proportions, she openly shows the emerging form. Always balanced, but still breaking all hitherto known laws of ceramics. Her sculptures bear their scars openly, with composure, holding their heads high. None of this would be a way to retreat into the idyll, as Möhwald said.

Galerie Metzger is showing two Halle artists close in life and work.
