30 Years of Galerie Metzger

For 30 years, Galerie Metzger has been a vibrant space for contemporary ceramics – for vessels, objects and sculptures – and a meeting place for art, artists and art lovers.

To mark this anniversary, we focus on a theme that in almost unique fashion symbolises the connection between earth and fire: wood-firing. In this process, chance and control, heat and time, surface and depth coalesce into unique forms of expression. Every piece bears the marks of the fire – distinctive, vibrant and of elemental beauty.

We would like to thank everyone who shares our love of ceramics, and we look forward to celebrating this anniversary together.

We view the hand-formed vessel as an archetypal object of sculpture,
where the void meets the tangible. In our work, we push material and application to their absolute limits; the transition between the functional and the dysfunctional is fluid, while the object is always viewed through an artistic and philosophical lens.

Through their form and utility, vessels embody the specific era and society in which they are created. Some of our objects call into question everyday gestures and routines.

Through idiosyncratic shaping, imbalance, and varied surfaces and textures, a new resonant experience emerges in habit, motor skills, and use. Touch creates awareness, allowing the vessel to move within the hand and be discovered, generating a tangible moment of pause in daily life.

In my white pieces, I strive to capture the silent expressions of snow on rocks. Applying ash glazes create delicate nuances that reflect the tranquility, depth and transience of mountain landscapes in winter.

The work reminiscent of a a flowing waterfall was made in a wood fired kiln. The interplay of flames, ash and kiln atmosphere defines every surface in a unique way, making the firing an essential part of the creative process.

The mountains where I live are the source of my work. I do not seek to depict their forms, their silence and their continuous change, but to make their essence tangible through clay, fire and ash.
